Doing a Water Damage Walkthrough of Your Home | SERVPRO® of Dublin/Vidalia/Claxton
Whether you are buying a new home, selling your current home or just hoping to catch any
serious water damage issues before they get out of hand, doing a walkthrough can tell you a lot
about what you need to know regarding the status of water damage to your home.
While many types of water damage will not be noticeable until the signs begin to show up
around the house, catching these signs early on can significantly lessen the overall damage that
is done.
Where to Check on Your Walkthrough for Water Damage
Check the Interior Walls and Ceilings
Water spots are often the first giveaway that there is water damage present. Roof leaks are an
extremely common source of water damage, and when the water passes through the roof, it can
either begin to pool behind the ceiling or flow down behind the drywall. In either situation, you
will generally see dark spots that may be soft to the touch, cracked drywall or ceilings, and even
peeling paint that will indicate damage.
Check the Floors
Any type of flooring can be susceptible to water damage, and if there is a subfloor present, it
can sustain damage, too. Water-damaged floors will often be warped, buckled or “cupped” as a
result of the moisture, and may even feel soft when you walk across them. Moisture can also
cause darkened spots on the floors just like it does on interior walls and ceilings.
Check the Basement and Attic, if Applicable
Basements and attics are two of the most common places to find water leaks because of how susceptible they are to letting moisture in. Checking these routinely for any signs of damage is key for catching water damage early. Make sure you are also paying attention with your
nose—the water damage might be hidden, but if mold growth has started already, you will
generally be able to smell it.
