The potential dangers storms bring to your home is a long list, including wind, hail, tornadoes and floods to name just a few. Extremes will vary according to the season and where your home is located, but there are always risks you should be ready for.
When you own your home, you want to know that you have done everything in your power to avoid potential losses and keep your family safe. Seasonally, there are a number of tasks you should add to your to-do list in order to be ready for the weather.
The weather in Georgia may change a lot, but generally, our area stays pretty mild. In the spring, we can see strong thunderstorms and heavy rains, while in the fall we can see a lot of wind and cold rains. Tornadoes are possible in either season, but typically occur more often in the spring.
Start preparing your home from storms on the outside and keep everyone safe inside.
Protecting your home from storms year-round doesn’t have to be complicated. Adding a few steps into your everyday routines can go a long way in keeping things safe. You can even get the kids involved and find ways to make it fun while you work.
Strong winds and heavy rain are something that pretty much everyone battles year-round and a common source of home damage. Keeping your gutters cleaned out and picking up loose debris around the yard can help you avoid damage from wind-flung objects or puddles of water. Strap down any furniture that lives outside permanently and keep other items like trash cans near the house where they can quickly be stashed when a storm is predicted.
Any time you are working in the yard, take an intentional walk around your property to look for growing gaps or rotting wood. Make sure windows and doors are well-sealed to avoid leaks during the next rain storm, and keep a close eye on your roof. You should be checking shingles after every windstorm and giving everything a thorough inspection every four months in order to stay on top of any needed maintenance.
Most of the time, preparing for a storm simply means rolling up your sleeves and putting in a little free labor around the yard. There are a few home upgrades you could consider adding, though, that could give you a little extra piece of mind.
Adding storm shutters to your home can be a quick and simple way to protect your windows during high winds. If you live in a heavily wooded area or often see high winds, upgrading to windows made from heavier materials could be a good investment. Gutter guards that keep leaves or other debris from building up are another great addition that could prevent roof and water damages.
If you have outbuildings on your property or live in a modular home, consider adding structural tie-downs in order to prevent damages when winds get high or a tornado forms.
Make sure you understand weather alerts, and keep two ways of receiving them nearby when storms are predicted. Find a safe space in your home where you and your family can shelter from storms, and keep some emergency supplies stored there. Make sure to include emergency contacts—and add SERVPRO® to that list. We can start restoration on your home day or night so you can get back to living.
