Getting Safely Through Winter Storms | SERVPRO of Dublin/Vidalia/Claxton

If you have lived in Georgia for a while, you know that winter can bring all four seasons in the course of a week. We may not often see heavy snows, but we can’t rule them out—just like we can’t rule out rain, sleet or ice.
No matter what happens, the more prepared we are, the safer we can stay. When your home is ready to ride out anything, you can avoid extensive damage and spend time enjoying the break in humidity winter provides.
Aside from buying plenty of ingredients for bread and milk sandwiches, there are a few other ways you can prepare your home when a winter storm is headed our way. You want to be able to stay off of the roads through the bulk of the storm in order to avoid dangerous driving situations.
Winter storms commonly knock the power out, especially since our area can regularly see freezing rain and ice. Invest in a weather radio and build an emergency kit that can get you through a few days without electricity.
Stock up on batteries, flashlights and first-aid supplies. Gather blankets and sleeping bags—if you have a fireplace, this might be a great time for an indoor family campout to keep everyone warm. Make sure you have plenty of water and food for everyone, and if you have a generator, make sure you keep it safely outside and follow all manufacturer guidelines.
Update your contact list ahead of the storm as well, and chat with your friends and family about the possibility of weathering the cold together. If things get really cold, check with the Salvation Army for a warming shelter.
Once the storm has passed and you can safely get outside, give your home an inspection. Check for any damage, but also prepare for some home maintenance in order to prevent future issues as well.
Snow isn’t very common in central Georgia, but rain, ice and wind are. Check your roof for potential wind damage, but also look for any debris pileup. Remove leaves and tree limbs, and make sure your gutter system is clear. Ice can form at roof corners pretty easily, so make sure to break anything up in order to let water run away from your home.
Check the rest of your gutter system by walking around the perimeter of your house. Look for disconnected downspouts, and clear debris away from your gutter exits. Take a look at your external vents around your home as well and remove any obstructions. Leaves can still be a big problem throughout the winter, be sure to keep vents clear in order to prevent potential carbon monoxide buildup inside your home.
